I interviewed as a remote candidate. The first interview was an intro to mob programming, which is how they work there – not independently but in a mob all day, video conferencing and taking turns screen-sharing to program. I was hesitant but went ahead. The next two interviews were simulated mobs where developers watched me solve programming challenges. It's uncomfortable being watched while thinking under test pressure, so speaking your thought process aloud helps. The developers were nice, which helped. I felt confident about both technical interviews, except for a database question where I got anxious designing tables on the fly with given requirements. It was a small bump, but I was disappointed when they called about my candidacy and tried to negotiate a lower salary. They said I checked every box but due to that 'hiccup,' the salary would be lower. This was bizarre and manipulative, a poor way to start. The phone call left a bad taste, so I wasn't too disappointed the next day by an email saying they weren't selecting me because they have enough back-end developers and want a front-end developer instead. They should figure that out before interviewing. Also, one hiring manager left very quickly, and other reviews mention high turnover. Lots of red flags, so be wary.

So basically, there's an online coding challenge first. After that, you have four interviews focused on specific domains. If you don't pass any one of those, they just stop the process and don't continue with the other interviews. They'll say they want to explore something with you, but if you can't recall something instantly, even if you can work through it, they'll just reject you.

  • How would you implement string replacement?
  • Design some MySQL tables, including their relationships.
