Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SnapStream Media.
Software Developer
I initially submitted my resume at a career fair and had a brief chat with them. They emailed me a couple weeks later to schedule a phone interview. The first phone interview involved a couple of technical questions. A week later, they requested a follow-up interview where they gave me three more challenging technical questions. They seemed like a good company, but after the last interview, they promised to let me know their decision the following week, and I haven't heard anything. This is quite disappointing; they should be upfront with candidates.
- Remove matching characters between two strings.
- Iterate through a tree, with the prompt explained indirectly to make it more difficult, and they wouldn't clarify the data structure.
- Implement a stack.
Software Engineer
I initially spoke with a SnapStream software engineer at the UT Austin career fair about how my computer science interests align with the company. Applying was as simple as dropping off my resume. A few days later, I had a one-hour phone interview that assessed my basic computer science skills through programming. After a couple of weeks, I was invited for an all-day on-site interview. This involved meeting with various employees, including marketing, two developers, the engineering director, and the president. We discussed general topics, and I worked through technical problems on a whiteboard. A notable part was an exercise using actual SnapStream code on a computer, which was a welcome change from other technical interviews where code wasn't executed. I later received and accepted an offer. The whole process spanned about three months, partly due to my ongoing doctorate in another city and the holiday season. SnapStream's communication was good throughout. I didn't start for about seven months post-offer to finish my degree.
- Do you have questions about specific subfields of software development, like databases, web development, or various algorithms, that you might not have extensive experience in, but can you still reason through them because you're a smart and capable computer scientist? We're looking for your potential to be a great software developer, not necessarily someone who's already done every kind of computer science.
Software Developer Intern
So I just finished the first round, which was a 60-minute phone interview. The recruiter started with a quick company intro, then asked me to introduce myself. They asked a few 'most' questions about my background. After that, I had to do 3 coding problems online: one involved string traversal, another was a recursive function to find a specific child (I forget the last one). Still waiting to hear back.
- Be prepared for questions about the 'most' significant things on your resume.
