I had a recruiter call, then a hiring manager chat, followed by a technical interview. It was two rounds total. They asked about my background, my knowledge of ML, and how I've done production-level deployment. The process was smooth and straightforward. I didn't get an offer, and I think it's because they wanted someone with LLM and deep learning experience.

The interview process was very conversational and made me feel heard. All the interviewers wanted to get to know me and how I think. Although it was formally an interview with questions, Smith Micro really helped take away the pressure of a traditional interview.

Behavioral Technical

Got referred by someone I knew. Within a couple of weeks, HR emailed me, and the hiring manager did a phone screen. The HR person and the hiring manager seemed a bit lost; they hadn't figured out what they really wanted, when I'd start, who would train me, or other important stuff. The phone screen wasn't really technical, just went over my resume and how my past experience fits the job. I talked to about four people. Some asked specific questions, but hardly any of them made me show what I knew. I was going for a role needing specific experience, but they didn't test that at all. There were behavioral and technical questions, but the technical ones were pretty general and could be answered by someone with just basic knowledge, not specific. They assumed you knew your stuff if you used the right buzzwords. It's clear some managers aren't qualified, and some key people shouldn't be in charge.
