Getting on the freelance content writing roster was super easy. Just one interview, and I had to send over some writing samples/my portfolio. I really liked how upfront they were about payment details.

I applied online and got referred. Then they emailed me to schedule this weird one-way video interview thing. I had to download an app and record myself answering 10 questions. I only had 2 days to do it, felt more like a work deadline. It was super uncomfortable, having to record videos on my phone and being given only 30 seconds to prep and a minute to answer. I had some tech issues even after practicing. The questions themselves weren't hard, but it's kinda strange they didn't even do a phone interview. Kinda weird knowing strangers will watch my 10 short videos without me seeing who they are. I really wanted to like Skyword but this process was a bummer.

  • The questions weren't that hard, but it was strange doing a one-sided video interview.

I took a long online assessment, then had two 30-minute phone interviews. After that, I went in for an in-person interview that was incredibly long, lasting 3.5 hours. I met with the HR Director from Boston and 5 tech/software managers. They each interviewed me separately and asked very similar questions, which was tiring and repetitive. I got a big headache. It's important to know their business really well, because the software guy from California can get annoyed if you're not precise or don't know enough. The HR rep from Boston was nice, as were the tech manager from Pittsburgh and the QA manager. The company is interesting, but their interview process needs work. They should consider a panel interview with all managers at once. I didn't get an offer, and apparently neither did anyone else since they reposted the job a week later.

Technical Other

I saw an ad and a recruiter emailed me back. We messaged a bit, and then he gave me a writing test. I finished it and thought it was good, but a few days later the recruiter said they reviewed it and weren't going forward with me. I guess I didn't do as well as I thought. Since the recruiter and I had a decent email chat, I messaged him back to thank him and ask what I missed on the test. I never heard back. It's annoying because as a writer, I'd like to know what I got wrong. I won't apply to Skyword again.
