Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Skyscanner.
Senior Systems Engineer
It was a thorough and complete interview process. There were 5 interviews in total, spread across two rounds. The first round consisted of 2 interviews, and the second round had 3 interviews. The technical interviews, which involved hard problems, weren't that difficult. Make sure to prepare well for the cultural interviews.
- How would you troubleshoot the process of a faulty application?
Distributed Systems Engineer
It was the first interview and it was a great experience. The recruiter asked about my experiences and answered my questions about relocation and living in Edinburgh. The meeting was very friendly. There will be two more interviews.

Systems Engineer
This was a terrible interview experience, frankly. Three interviews plus an initial chat, taking over 3.5 hours across three weeks. It felt like 'death by committee' with no clear direction. The 'technical challenge' wasn't relevant to the role at all, though I did give feedback on that. I was really excited to apply, but the process made me vow not to use their products. The length and number of interviews (3+ hours is too much) and never speaking to anyone on the actual team is a disgrace. It feels counter-intuitive, likely selecting for people good at interviewing rather than experienced for the job. Asking about AWS for a role not involving it shows massive oversight or ignorance. They feel like time wasters. I can't even recommend improvements, it needs a full overhaul. The recruiter was nice but clearly has no real input.
- Can you describe a complex or interesting systems engineering project you've worked on recently to gauge your expertise?
- Tell me about the planning and execution of a past project, focusing on its business goals, impact, and how you measured success.
- What best practices did you apply in that project, and what was your specific contribution?
