First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Singapore Management University.
Lecturer
The interview panel was professional and welcoming. The questions were tough but fair, and they focused on teaching philosophy and case studies. They gave clear feedback, and the process was transparent and communication was timely. It was a respectful and supportive experience overall, I'd definitely recommend this employer.
- What motivates your interest in joining our institution?
- Could you elaborate on your teaching philosophy?
- How would you approach teaching using case studies?
Executive
I applied for a role at SMU Academy and was surprised by how fast I heard back—within 1-2 days, I got an email to set up the first interview. This first interview was in person on campus and had two employees, one of them the team leader. The interviewers were nice and it lasted an hour. After about 1.5 weeks, I got an email inviting me to a second interview with the directors of SMU Academy via MS Teams. The interviewers were late, and though generally polite, they didn't ask many questions. Near the end, they seemed rushed and didn't ask if I had questions. I asked one, but their response felt weak. The interview was only about 30 minutes, and after another 1.5 weeks, I got an email about their decision on the job offer.
- Could you share three of your strengths and three of your weaknesses?
Programme Manager
The hiring manager seemed to have a bias against me from the start, thinking I wasn't a good fit because I came from a different department and industry and had a hard time learning. Throughout the interview, it felt like they were trying to prove their initial bias, rather than being open to my responses. They kept disagreeing with my answers even though I thought I answered them correctly. It also seemed like the hiring manager wasn't sure what they wanted and was looking for a unicorn candidate who could do everything.
- Could you tell me why you're interested in this position?
- What are your thoughts on work-life balance?
Senior Executive
Applied via SMU website for a Senior Executive, Communications role and was contacted by SMU Lead 2 days later. Scheduled a face-to-face 1st interview for the following week with the Lead and another manager. It lasted about 30 minutes, followed by a simple written assessment. The interview felt casual and friendly, with the hiring manager being very easy-going, mixing in some Mandarin and Hokkien, and chatting normally to get to know me better as an individual. The 2nd interview was via Teams with the Deputy Director & Executive Director. They asked about my experience at my current company and the systems I use there.
- What do you do in your free time?
- Can you describe your current role at your company?
- Which systems do you use at your company?
