First interview was to understand more about you, the role and align on skills with the hiring manager. The second interview was with the team lead to see if you would be a good fit for the team and align with their way of working.

The interview started with a quick recruiter chat, then an hour-long interview with an Engineering Manager and an Engineer which felt pretty easygoing. After that, there was a take-home project where I had to build a UI for an API using two 2D wireframe mockups. They said not to spend more than 3-4 hours on it, but the feedback focused on missing implied features and not perfectly matching the monochrome 2D wireframes (like using 4 columns instead of 3), lack of error handling, and lack of documentation. Honestly, in my 15 years of experience, no one could realistically complete all that—design, API investigation, functionality, error handling, tests, and documentation—in just 4 hours unless they were speedrunning it or lying about the time. It seems like they expect way more than 4 hours of work for a 4-hour task, which feels like a waste of time and reflects poorly on Signal AI's hiring process.

The interview process was really fast, and everyone was super helpful with info about the job and company. It felt like a team effort. First, I had a call with Steve, the recruiter, who was very knowledgeable. Then, I talked to two engineers who were really open about their work and the engineering vibe. After that, there was a quick take-home task where I had to build a CLI tool for language processing, which was a cool change from the usual CRUD tasks. Finally, the last interview had two parts: a short pair-programming session and then a discussion with two engineering managers.
