Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Shelter Insurance.
Insurance Agent
It was a chill interview. The person I spoke with was professional and gave me some pointers on how to succeed as an agent at Shelter Insurance. Definitely dress professionally. Make sure you have two to three questions to ask them.
- What makes you a strong candidate for Shelter Insurance?

Got referred by a friend, and a recruiter reached out within a few days. We had a 30-minute chat initially to see if we were a good fit. Then, we set up an in-person interview at the local office for the next week, where the recruiter covered the job basics and expectations. That was about an hour. We scheduled another, more official interview for the following week, which was under an hour. Since we both wanted to move forward, I then had two more interviews at the state office. Shelter requires three employees to interview candidates, and I also had to take an online personality test. I managed to do the last two interviews back-to-back, each lasting about an hour and a half. The first was with a district manager and was like the first interview but more detailed. The second was with another district manager and the regional manager, and it was definitely the most intense. They really wanted to understand me as a salesperson and a person. Asking questions I'd written down really helped me throughout.
- Tell me about yourself and your experience.
- What are your biggest strengths and areas for development?
- Can you share an example of a sales challenge you faced and how you overcame it?

The hiring process is very lengthy. First meeting was with a recruiter, it was good and took about one hour, at a local coffee shop. Then after my credit and application was approved, I was asked to take an online test. After I passed the test, I had a second interview with the recruiter, about two weeks after the first interview. The second interview took about two hours at a local agency, which mostly consisted of scripted questions about my warm market and how I would handle certain situations. I was told I would receive a $2000 per month salary plus commissions, and that they would cover most of my expenses but I would be responsible for some expenses. Then after two more weeks I had a telephone interview with the district manager which took about half an hour. The DM told me I would be called in two more weeks to let me know how far along they were hiring process. I was told that I would work for 2-4 weeks. then go to training for 10 days in Missouri (I pay the airfare), then 4 more weeks of work and a second training in Missouri. Then, if hired, I would sign a contract and begin receiving salary, paid after you work a month, on a monthly basis.
