Software Engineer
The interview process had three rounds: a senior engineer, the CTO, and the SVP. There were no 'IQ test' type questions; instead, it was a qualitative review of past projects and how they match current needs. Everyone I met seemed reasonable, and the CTO was particularly intelligent. The order of interviews changed from what was initially planned, likely because they found a new potential match for my skills. Before the interviews, the interviewers had researched my background using sources other than my resume.
- Inquiries about your work style.
- Questions about your commute preferences.
Software Engineer
First, I did a written assessment with several technical questions about general software engineering practice and big data. Then, the company's HR tech recruiter contacted me for a phone screen. The HR person was really friendly and took time to tell me about the company's current situation and its culture. After that, I had a second phone screen via Google Hangout with an engineer who asked more technical questions.
- Can you explain object-oriented programming to someone who isn't technical?
- What is big data?
- Tell me about any personal projects you've worked on outside of work and school.
Senior Software Engineer
Recruiter reached out and I had a phone chat. That call covered CS fundamentals, design patterns, my background, projects, and skills. Also asked about linux commands and did some pair programming and a basic system design question. Then, I had a remote onsite. This included more pair programming coding challenges, a complex system design problem using kafka (even though I mentioned I didn't have kafka experience, the problem required it for a pseudo-code solution), revisiting my experience and projects, and a culture fit discussion.
- Can you determine if a string composed of various parentheses is correctly balanced, like "()([]{()})" which is valid, but "()))" is not?
