Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Shane Co..
Sales Associate
After submitting my online application, I was invited in following a personality assessment. I spoke with a woman about my relevant people and sales experience, as well as life experience. I received a rejection without explanation. Based on what I observed in the waiting room, I got the impression this is a micro-managed, ageist organization that likely doesn't value or trust its employees.
- What is your motivation for seeking employment at Shane Company?
Sales Associate
This company is heavily biased and doesn't value experience, favoring appearance. They interviewed a former coworker who had only 1 year of experience and didn't even apply, basically handing her the job. I have over 6 years of sales and customer service experience, applied twice over two years, and never heard back. It seems they might be hesitant due to my "ethnic" name or are simply not seeking qualified candidates but rather individuals who fit a certain look, which they associate with "relatability." Their unstructured interviews allow for affinity bias. If you're highly qualified or a person of color, don't bother applying; they might interview you just to meet diversity quotas while already having a predetermined hire. It's disheartening that such biased recruiting practices still exist.
- Can you introduce yourself?
Sales Associate
I went to a hiring event, and it was more of a conversation than an interview. The people there were really nice, and it made me feel super welcome. I felt like Shane Co. would be a great fit after talking with them. They seem like down-to-earth people who want passionate individuals with good personalities on their team. I spoke with a recruiter and then a manager. It was a really good experience.
- How persistent are you in sales and can you close deals?
- How do you handle criticism?
- What type of work environment do you prefer?
