Segal Actuarial Analyst Interview Questions
& Process

The phone interview was about 30 minutes and focused on my past experience. Then, I had an onsite interview that lasted around 3 hours. It consisted of four 30-minute interviews with four actuaries. The interviews were primarily behavioral, covering my experience and education, and asking about my interest in pension consulting.

I got a call from an administrator at the SF office after applying. They asked about my salary expectations and if I needed visa sponsorship. I asked them some questions about the company and we chatted before scheduling an interview. When I got to Segal's floor, I had to call a number to get in. The same administrator met me and took me to a meeting room for the interview. It felt pretty informal; people seemed to dress casually, like in polo shirts. After about 15 minutes, the interviewer said I'd be talking to someone else, a person with a slightly higher position. This second interviewer and I talked about the work environment and my expectations for about 10 minutes. Then, she led me to a third employee, who had a position just above hers. He was more reserved and really scrutinized my resume, even suggesting I condense it. Finally, he sent me to a fourth interviewer, another administrator, and we went through a similar process. I appreciated getting to ask multiple people about their opinions on the company one-on-one. I especially valued the input from the non-management interviewers. It was a bit frustrating, though, because after asking the first two interviewers questions, I had to choose between repeating those same questions to the last two or just saying I had no questions (other than asking for their personal takes on the company). The end of the interview was strange; the fourth interviewer walked me to the door and then gave a long, unclear explanation about when I might hear back, which was completely undefined. It's been nearly a month with no word, so I guess I didn't get the job.

I applied online and got a call back the same week to schedule an interview for the following week. I got an offer a week after my interview. The first round was a 10-minute phone interview where they asked about my experience and interest and checked for red flags. Then, I had an on-site interview with four people: an analyst, a reviewer, a final reviewer, and my potential manager. It was all behavioral, focusing on my interest in the field and company, and my ability to work and communicate with them, rather than specific technical knowledge.
