Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Secretariat.
Associate
First round interview was in early November, and did not get back to me until basically the end of January. It was a case interview, fairly standard for economic consulting.
- Regarding the provided graph, does it indicate causation or correlation between the two elements?

So, the interview process was pretty detailed and organized. First, I just sent in my application with my resume and cover letter. After that, there was an online assessment to test my data analysis skills, and I could use Excel for it. Then, I had a half-hour online behavioral interview where I talked about my experiences and gave examples of how I've used my skills and handled tough situations, using the STAR method. The 'Super Day' was the main event, super intense but also really good. It involved five interviews covering behavioral stuff, technical deep dives, and some on-the-spot critical thinking questions. I also had a lunch with current associates, which was more chill and a good way to ask questions and for them to get to know me. Finally, there was a case study where I had to look at a problem and suggest what to do.
- What makes you interested in econ consulting?
- What draws you to Secretariat?
- Can you share an example of a team-based situation?
Associate
The interview started with a phone screen with a current associate who asked about my resume, focusing on teamwork and data experience. Then, I went to the DC office for 4 more interviews: two with economists, one with the person who did my phone screen, and a panel with 4 other associates. These interviews also covered my data experience and interest in economic consulting.
- What is your motivation for pursuing economic consulting, and why are you interested in SE?
- What makes you want to get into economic consulting and SE?
