Store Manager
I was contacted directly by a recruiter on LinkedIn about this role. I did my research and applied formally. Then I got an invite to a first interview, and I provided my availability. However, instead of calling, they sent an email saying they couldn't reach me and removed me from consideration, even though we had been in direct contact. I emailed the provided contact and the recruiter, but I haven't heard back, and the role is still open. It was a strange experience, showing how some recruiters make mistakes even at high levels.

Assistant Store Manager
Heard about an Assistant Store Manager opening from a friend and applied via the Screwfix website. First, had to submit a CV and complete an online assessment with practical and experience-based questions. About two days later, got an email to arrange a telephone interview with recruitment, which was the next day. Researched the company beforehand, including expansion plans and culture, and visited a store. The phone interview covered previous experiences, attitude towards situations, salary expectations, and competency-based questions. I'm currently in a similar role, so it went well. Compliance to procedures seemed important. The day after, got a call for a face-to-face interview with the Area Manager at a store. Had to reschedule due to short notice. Dressed smartly in a suit and arrived early, spoke with some staff, and then met the Area Manager. The interview focused on situational questions and how my experience would be beneficial, along with questions about giving notice, flexibility, and more competency-based questions. It went well. I advise being personable, presentable, passionate, and knowledgeable. Got the job.

Store Manager
I applied for a Designate SM position through the company's website. I didn't hear back for about 3 months. Then, another similar role opened up in a nearby area, so I applied again. A couple of weeks later, I got an email saying I'd advanced and needed to complete a digital interview. It took me about 30 minutes to get the software working, which was frustrating. The interview involved answering 6 questions while being filmed by the software. It felt really unnatural and didn't achieve its goal of letting me show my personality. I figured I wouldn't get the job because this process doesn't fit my style. The next morning, I got an automated rejection email, so it's clear they didn't really watch my video. Even though I've been a customer and know I could manage one of their stores, and have managed larger teams and sales figures before, it's disappointing that their system is so automated and leads to rejection without any human interaction, either by phone or in person. It feels impersonal and makes me question how much they value employees if they handle recruitment this way.
