First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Schneider Downs & Co..
Intern
I applied through my school's job page and got an interview. There was a dinner the night before to meet employees, which was nice, though they didn't seem too enthusiastic about the company. The next day, I had a 45-minute interview. The interviewer seemed really unhappy. I think it went okay, but I found out I didn't make it to the second round the following week. I wasn't too upset though, since the employees didn't really sell the company to me.
- Are you speaking with any other companies?
- Why would you choose to work with us over Schneider Downs?
Accountant
I initially sent my resume to a partner after meeting them at a campus event. Then, HR gave me a call for a short, relaxed chat. After that, they scheduled an office interview. The office interview involved four 1-on-1 interviews. The first two were with Audit Managers, and the next two were with Audit Shareholders. In each interview, they first went over your resume and asked about your past experiences. I'd suggest bringing extra resume copies. This part is straightforward if you're ready to talk more about your background. The second part of each interview was more of a casual chat. They wanted to see if you're a reasonable person who would fit in with the team. It's important to sell yourself here; they're looking for hardworking and easygoing individuals, which is probably what most employers want. By the way, the managers and shareholders seemed to be Steelers fans.
- Can you tell me why you're interested in working here and pursuing a career in accounting?
- What are your thoughts on the Steelers?
- Why do you want to be an accountant?
Auditor
My interview was held on-campus at the University of Pittsburgh. Schneider Downs hosts a pre-interview social gathering at a local restaurant before the main event, aiming to help interviewees relax. The following day, I had a one-on-one behavioral interview with a head HR person from Schneider Downs. It was a standard behavioral interview, without any unusual elements, except they asked for my SAT score, which I found a bit strange given it's a high school metric. Unlike other firms, Schneider Downs uses US mail for communication, which is an interesting, albeit old-fashioned, approach. Overall, the interview process was quite straightforward and not stressful.
- What was your SAT score?
Tax Associate
I applied online and got invited for a second interview at the Pittsburgh office. They kindly covered parking downtown. I had three interviews with a tax manager, a shareholder, and the head of HR, who seemed a bit disengaged. There was also a lunch with staff. The office has an open-concept design, which felt a bit exposed. Everyone was nice though.
- What makes you a good candidate for this position?
