Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Sberbank.
Data Scientist
First, I spoke with HR. Then, there was a technical interview where they asked basic ML questions and a lot about soft skills. After that, I had a take-home test with SQL and linear regression. They said they'd reply within a week, but I never heard back.
- How do you handle stress?
Data Scientist
The interview process started with a recruiter call, then moved on to a phone screen. During the phone screen, they asked me to talk about myself, covering my professional background and skills. Then they asked why I wanted to work for them, to see what attracts me to the company and how I'd fit their culture. After that, they asked about my strengths and weaknesses, which is a common question to gauge self-awareness. Finally, they asked how I handled conflicts in my previous job to assess my conflict resolution abilities.
- Can you describe yourself and your professional background?
- What makes you want to join our company and how do you see yourself fitting in?
- What do you consider to be your strengths and weaknesses?
Data Scientist
So a former colleague advised me for the position. I was briefly acquainted with my new manager, we met at conferences. So he knew a bit about me and I had good recommendations. The interview was light. I asked more about the project ahead than he asked me. Then I had some general reasoning and computation test which was badly translated to Russian. To sum up, I had 2 rounds of phone interview, 2 on-site and one general test.
- Can you write a SQL query to join 3 tables with duplicates and use a CTE with interval chaining logic?
- For this project, propose an A/B experiment design, including metrics, partitioning, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Describe your approach to an ML classification task, including data preparation, XGBoost, and stacking.
