First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Savers.
Assistant Manager
I applied, waited, then got a call back from HQ. After that, I had a phone interview with someone from HQ who seemed to like me and said they would pass my info to the local managers. After that, I heard nothing. I went to the store in person to introduce myself and hand over my resume, hoping to put a face to the name, but most people were rude.
- Can you tell me about your skills?
- What do you consider your weaknesses?
- What are your career aspirations?
Manager
The interview process was quick, but the interviews themselves were long and very detailed. It was well put together, and I got to meet a lot of the company's executives who were really involved in the interviews. It was a very professional experience overall. They did ask some of the same questions, but I guess there's only so much you can ask!
- Can you describe a time when you had to use the STAR method to answer a question?
Management Trainee
The DM called me personally to set up the interview. I checked out Savers on Glassdoor beforehand and wasn't super excited based on reviews. Still went for practice. I got there on time. Asked an associate for directions, and she just walked away without acknowledging me. The interviewer brought this up, saying there's a customer service issue at that store, but nothing's being done (Red Flag 1). The DM who scheduled it wasn't there (Red Flag 2), so I met with a store manager instead. The back area looked like the bad reviews I read - just employees working quietly with no interaction. It seemed like a very unhappy place. The interviewer also talked about Savers sending merchandise to third world countries like it was a good deed, but they get paid for it. The interview seemed okay, and I was invited back for a second interview the next day with the DM and another store manager. The store manager did most of the talking. They said attendance is crucial because if someone's absent, it's hard to meet the daily processing quota. This sounded like a sweatshop environment (Red Flag 3), pushing people too hard. I thought they'd have on-call people for absences. No offer was given, and honestly, I'm glad. I later got a similar job elsewhere with much better reviews.
- What's a quality you seek in an employee?
- How would you rate yourself on that quality?
- If you give yourself a high rating, you have to pick another quality.
