First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Save-A-Lot Food Stores.
Assistant Manager
I put my resume out there and a recruiter reached out. I had to fill out an application after doing some digging. Then I had a phone interview with the recruiter. It was pretty standard. After that, there was an online test which was really hard and focused on general business stuff like scheduling and profit margins. I thought I bombed it. They call you to tell you if you passed, and if you do, you get a store tour. The tour involves walking around with the store manager and hearing about expectations, plus you can ask questions. It seems like a job that requires both physical and mental effort, so they probably want to see you in action. Then there was a sit-down interview with two District Managers. Again, pretty standard, mostly asking about my work history. I had researched the company, so it went well. I wasn't super confident I'd get the job after that, but they called the next morning. My best advice is to show you know the company and the grocery business. When they ask about your work history, give examples showing you're willing to do whatever it takes. They're looking for someone hands-on, not just a manager.
- How would you handle scheduling and profit margins?
- Tell me about your previous work experience.
Management Trainee
I first talked to someone from this program at our college career fair and then got scheduled for a one-on-one interview the very next day. That interview lasted about 30-45 minutes and was mostly general questions about why I wanted the job, why I'd be a good fit, what I knew about the company, and how I fit into the company culture. Then, I got a call to schedule a really quick phone interview with someone else, asking similar questions. The last step was an interview at their corporate office. They flew me out to St. Louis for about half a day of interviews with different people, which included one-on-one and group settings. The whole process felt like it took forever. They kept talking about how they think customers see them, but I felt like customers actually see them differently. I wasn't sure if they were just trying to convince us or if they really believed it themselves.
- What makes you unique and how do you fit into our company culture?
- Explain why you're a better fit for this role compared to other candidates.
- What motivated you to apply for this position?
Assistant Manager
The hiring process for this role was quite extensive. It began with essay-style questions submitted via email. Following that, there was a phone interview. The next stage involved visiting a store for an informal discussion with the store manager, who assessed my suitability. The concluding step was a panel interview with three district managers. After this, I received the job offer.
- Tell me about your customer service experience.
- What are some common customer service challenges you've encountered?
- How do you approach ensuring a positive customer experience?
