Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute.
Research Assistant
First, there was a quick phone call with someone from talent acquisition. Then, I had a Zoom meeting with the Principal Investigator (PI) to quickly go over what they're looking for in this role. Finally, I did an on-site interview where I met with everyone in the lab, spending about 20 minutes with each person.
- What do you hope to achieve in this role?
- What are your long-term career aspirations?
Research Assistant
It was a pretty standard interview. I met with two PIs and they showed me around the lab. The interview took about 50 minutes. Unfortunately, they decided to close the research position and not move forward with hiring for it. It's upsetting how unprofessional companies can be, wasting people's time and money on an interview only to cancel the position last minute. A company should really be sure about the necessity of a position before posting about it. Very improper behavior.
- Can you discuss the technical aspects of your past projects and experiences?
Research Assistant
It was a really quick process. First, I had a phone chat with the PI about my background and why I wanted to work there. It felt more like a chat than a formal interview, which was nice and chill. Then I had an in-person meeting later that week. It was pretty similar, and I met with everyone on the team one by one. They showed me what they're working on. Overall, it was a relaxed and comfortable interview, even though I didn't get the job.
- What are your career aspirations?
- Can you describe your research experience?
- How familiar are you with our lab's research?
