Store Manager
The interview process took about two weeks and involved multiple interviews. It started with a face-to-face meeting with the district manager, then moved to a phone interview with the human resources manager where you'd need to state your salary requirements (if you're looking for more than $16/hr, it's probably not going to work out). After that, you'd proceed to the regional manager, which might start over the phone and then move to an in-person meeting.
- Could you describe the fundamental responsibilities expected in a management role?
Store Manager
I applied online on Indeed.com and a day later got an email saying they'd contact me if I was a good fit. Two days later the District Manager (DM) called to set up an interview for the next week. The DM interview was pretty straightforward with intros, qualifications, and about 8 scenario-based questions like how I ensure superior customer service. She talked about the store, its employees (two new ones needing training), and the manager's expectations, mentioning the store's volume needed to increase. I asked about other candidates and next steps, and she said serious candidates move to the HR interview. We discussed salary, and I stated I'd expect the higher end due to my experience. The interview lasted about 1 hour 20 minutes. About 5 days later, the DM called to say I'd interview with HR for the Midwest, and we scheduled a phone interview for the end of the week. The HR interview started on time, and she was very bubbly, doing most of the talking. She asked about 5-6 scenario-based questions, including one about shrink numbers and another about resolving conflict between associates, stressing not to make snap decisions. A surprise was the salary negotiation since I didn't have my numbers ready. We discussed my previous salary vs. this one, but nothing concrete. She mentioned the next step would be interviewing with the Regional Vice President (RVP), likely a phone interview but possibly in person if she was in the area. About a week later, HR called to say I was selected to move forward and that the RVP would be in my area for an in-person interview, which was a 2.5-hour drive. I went anyway. At the RVP interview, after intros and a 'tell me about yourself,' she mentioned a new interview packet for store managers and that I'd be the first to try it. The questions were similar to the DM's but more numerous (around 20), focusing on conflict resolution and management style. She asked about my expectations for the store, and I said double-digit growth. She shared her career path and then suggested I speak with a current store manager. I met the store manager and we talked about daily routines for about 5-10 minutes while the RVP was on a call. When the RVP returned, we wrapped up. She then told me I got the job! We discussed salary, which was $16.50/hr, a pay cut but fair. She then mentioned I'd get emails for a background check and drug test, and then I could start. I thanked her and drove home.
- Tell me what you do to ensure superior customer service?
- Negotiation with HR was unfamiliar, but it worked out in the end.
Store Manager
First you'll meet with the District Manager, who will lead the conversation but be ready. She's watching for any mistakes, so stay sharp. If you make it past that, you'll have a phone call with the regional manager. She's got a list of questions she'll read out. Be prepped for this call and answer everything truthfully. They're really looking for any inconsistencies and just a general sense of whether you're being straight with them. You should hear back about an offer within 48 hours.
