Principal
I was contacted by their internal recruiting team. First, there was a 30 min phone screen, then a 60 min in-depth phone interview with the same person. After that, a 30 min call with a partner, and I had to read The Alliance book in between. The next thing was the evaluation criteria assignment (be careful what you reveal). Then, an in-person meeting with a principal to review the eval criteria and do more Q&A. The case study was next, it was very involved and time-consuming, with a 35% pass rate. I presented the case study to two people on a video call. After passing, I did an EQ assessment and a job shadow with a project team on-site with a client (their feedback goes to the hiring team). Then, another call with the same partner to recap. The final step was dinner with the CEO and his wife. I also had to do a drug test and a thorough background check, including a credit review, before the offer stage. The whole process took about 2.5 months. After all this, the drug test, background check, and setting up the CEO dinner, I got an email saying I was no longer being considered because all positions were filled. This was a shock, especially since I was coordinating dinner dates the week before. I'd asked multiple times about open spots and if others were ahead of me, and was told there's constant demand for the principal role. A call with the partner confirmed it was a headcount issue and that more roles would open next quarter. But then I was told the additional headcount wasn't available. I suspect my honesty about being close to another offer made them think I wasn't serious, which is unfair. If not, their lack of honesty about headcount or the reason for not proceeding is disappointing. It seems they don't fully practice what they preach in The Alliance book. If this wasn't the reason, their handling of the situation shows a lack of honesty. Their unprofessional and dishonest handling turned me off to the company and the role.

The interview process began with an email from HR, followed by a one-on-one screening to assess my suitability and discuss compensation upfront, which I really appreciated. Next, I had a phone interview with a partner who provided more details about the role and assigned several homework tasks, including reading and a case study. I then presented my case study to two partners, who offered feedback to help me prep for the final interview with the then senior partner, now CEO. The final step involved meeting the Senior Partner in person over breakfast to pitch the case study. We later arranged a dinner with our spouses to finalize details. My spouse and I flew out to the Senior Partner's hometown, with the company covering accommodation at a resort. During the day, the SP and I discussed the offer details, including some light negotiation, ensuring it was a good mutual fit. In the evening, we had a pleasant dinner with our spouses, focusing on conversation and minimal work talk, which made me feel the company valued my family's support. A week later, the initial partner called with the offer. We negotiated within a narrow range of $10K/year until we agreed on the contract language. The negotiation was quick, fair, and friendly, making me very happy with my decision to join the firm.

Really enjoyed the process, it was comprehensive. They focused a lot on culture, skills, desire to learn, autonomy, and understanding my career, social, and financial values. I met with most of the partners, and other principals & consultants. It was a good mix of online and in-person meetings, covering both formal interviews and casual social interactions. I got a good feel for the firm's core values & culture early on, and they talked about adopting business practices from Reid Hoffman's "The Alliance".
- Can you share an instance where you identified, prototyped, and addressed a weakness in a Go-To-Market strategy for a client or your company? What were the results, both in terms of stories and data?
