First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Ryerson.
Inside Sales Representative
I scheduled a morning call. We went over company details and pay, and I asked some questions. They said I'd hear back this week. It's been 48 hours with no response. I'll call again, but if they don't respect time by not updating on the status, I'm out. Not interested in a messy company that can't even communicate after agreeing to do so.
- Can you explain how your background aligns with the requirements of this role?
- What are your future career aspirations while working with our team?
Inside Sales Representative
I met with Ryerson at a career fair and then about a week later, I was called in for an interview. Two people interviewed me for about an hour. After the interview, I was given a tour of the warehouse. A week and a half after that, I got the offer.
- Tell me about a situation where you used your negotiation skills in a business setting.
Inside Sales Representative
I went through two interviews before they made me an offer. It felt more like a casual chat than a formal interview. They didn't use the STAR method, which asks you to recall past experiences. The interviewer seemed to think that asking 'what would you do?' gives a better sense of someone's personality, character, and skills, compared to relying on memory of past events. They felt the STAR method focuses too much on memory and candid answers, and detracts from finding the right person.
- How did you find out about our company, and what do you know about us?
