It was a long interview process, but it moved along quickly. I had several interviews with different leaders at the company. It began with a phone interview and then moved into more rounds. Most of them were on Teams, but the last one was in person.
- What makes you want to work for Ryan Companies?
Data Engineer
So, there were three rounds in total. First, a recruiter screen. Then, a behavioral interview which was actually in-person and felt more like a chat to get to know more about the company and what the job would be like. I gathered they're just starting to build up their data engineering team, so things are pretty new there. The technical interview was online, and no actual coding was involved, just questions about technical stuff, system design, and my past projects or resume. Some of the system design questions were pretty tough, but some SQL questions were really basic. For both the behavioral and technical interviews, I was interviewed by a few people, like 2 or 3.
- Can you walk me through a data pipeline you've built, from beginning to end, or give an overview of a data pipeline's lifecycle?
- Could you explain the distinctions between INNER, LEFT, and RIGHT joins?
Marketing Director
I went through a fast-paced process with five interviews over four days, both in-person and virtual. After that, I was asked to complete a personality test, which I hadn't seen mentioned in reviews, but the recruiter assured me everyone takes it. Around the same time, I met the two people who would report to me, and my references were contacted and confirmed. The whole thing seemed to go well, and I had positive interactions with everyone. I was expecting an offer, but instead got a rejection email. When I asked for feedback, I was told nothing was relayed to the recruiter. It's surprising after such an involved process to be rejected, especially since meeting direct reports and checking references felt significant. I also had two referrals, one being a former coworker and another colleague who tried to recruit me but is happy in her current role. They emphasize culture, but this experience made me question its authenticity.

Project Engineer
So, first you have a phone call with HR, and then there's a site or video interview with VPs and division managers. After that, you get a pre-employment assessment test that you have to finish. Just a heads up, doing the assessment doesn't guarantee an offer. It takes about 3 hours to complete. This has happened to me a few times in the last year for different roles in different places. The interview itself is pretty conversational and usually pretty informal, mostly focusing on your experience.
- Could you tell me about your favorite project and the reasons behind it?
