The interview process involved three stages. First, there was a 30-minute chat with the recruiter where I had to give a summary of my background and experience, talk about my familiarity with the tools and languages from the job description, explain a project I was proud of, and discuss my willingness to relocate. Then, I had a 30-minute meeting with the VP of Machine Learning and Data Science. We introduced ourselves, and I had to explain a machine learning project I completed from start to finish. I also discussed my interest in the role, given it was a bit different from my previous experiences, and shared an example of how I communicate my work to non-domain experts. This part was a free-flowing conversation. Finally, there was an hour-long meeting with the Senior Manager of Data Science, which included a live coding session, questions about statistics and data analysis for starting an ML project, and some basic ML concepts like decision trees and exploding/vanishing gradients.

The salary for the role in Boston/NYC is $100K-$130K, which seems like a lowball offer in the current market, but I decided to move forward anyway. The first step was a recruiter call, and the recruiter was really nice. They took down my information to pass along. After that, things got rough. The second round was a 30-minute chat directly with the VP of Engineering, which felt like skipping several levels. There was no coding or behavioral questions. It felt like a vibe check, and it made me suspect that management might be controlling and untrusting. The VP spent about 10 minutes asking about me and gave me the rest of the time. We finished early by five minutes. A week later, I got a standard rejection email.
