Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at RTI International.
Economist
I applied online, and about three weeks later, a recruiter reached out to me to discuss my background and research experience. They then arranged a video interview with the hiring manager and another economist. This video interview lasted about 30 minutes and focused mainly on my resume and research history.
- Regarding the senior economist position, could you elaborate on the ideal candidate profile you are seeking?
- Can you describe your experience with specific types of data relevant to this role?
- Could you detail your experience with particular models pertinent to this position?
Economist
The hiring process was a bit drawn out, but it turned out to be worth the wait. After I applied, an email reached out to me to schedule a phone interview, which took place a couple of weeks later. Following that, I had a half-day interview where I met most of the people I would be collaborating with. A few weeks after that, around six weeks in total, I was called in again to meet with senior executives at my center. The very next day, I received a call extending a job offer.
- What sparked your interest in the field of economics?
Economist
I applied through their careers page. About three months later, I got an email to schedule a phone interview with a manager. The first interview asked standard questions about my knowledge of the company and my motivation to work there. The second interview was in-person at their office with the whole team I'd be joining. It lasted from 9 AM to 1 PM, with several 30-minute one-on-one interviews. Afterward, I had lunch with most of the team on campus. A few days following that, they requested my unofficial transcript. A couple of weeks after that, I got an email from one of the interviewing managers saying I didn't get the offer. Everyone was really nice and seemed happy with their jobs.
- Can you introduce yourself?
- What's an area for improvement your former managers would point out?
