First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Royal Bank of Scotland International.
Intern
It was a phone interview with some basic questions about my motivation, relevant experiences, and my strengths and weaknesses. I talked to only one person, and it lasted about 30 minutes. No other interviews were needed after that.
- How do you handle pressure?
Intern
After submitting my application and completing some online tests, I was invited to an assessment centre. This involved a written SWOT analysis where I was given an hour to review a lot of information. Then there was a group exercise, also about the same company as the SWOT analysis. In this, three of us acted as advisors and three as members of the credit board, and we had to reach an agreement on whether to change the level of working with a client. Following that were two competency interviews, which were pretty standard and just involved fit questions. Finally, there was a presentation about the same firm from the SWOT analysis and group exercise. I had to talk for 10 minutes about the objectives of the task, and then there was a Q&A session.
- What are your thoughts on how to forecast free cash flow?
Intern
It was a bit tough because all the applicants are really good from the top universities in the UK and Europe. First, there was a Numerical Test + Reasoning test, 20 mins, 22 questions, pretty standard like online ones. The calculators provided by RBS were basic, like you couldn't directly input complex calculations. Then, a 35 min test, which I'm not sure how to label. You're given tables with some missing data and formulas in a booklet, and you need to calculate ratios. The key is to be fast and accurate. After getting the results, you have to check them against 2 or 3 rating matrices to determine the company's credit rating. There were over 20 such questions. Following that, a 40 min individual task, then a 5 min Presentation and a 25 min Q&A session. No group discussions were part of the RBS AC. There were 3 individual 1-on-1 interviews which were competency-based. They also included Brain Teasers, some might need a little calculation, but I think you could probably do them mentally without writing them down. Good luck to everyone!
- Given your background pursuing a PhD in Statistics, can you explain your motivation for seeking a role as a trader rather than a quant position?
