First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Root Inc..
Actuarial Analyst
So the interview process involved a take-home assignment where I had to use SQL and R for a dataset analysis, focusing on triangle loss. Then there was a technical screen that followed up on the take-home, testing my basic stats and insurance knowledge. Finally, there was an onsite interview with 5 rounds, covering probability, my curiosity, a past project, and SQL/R skills.
- Can you explain the assumptions of linear regression?
- What are the differences between various types of SQL joins?
Actuarial Analyst
Applied online, heard back in about a week. First up was a 30-minute call with the recruiter. Then, a video chat with the hiring manager, mostly behavioral stuff. After that, a 3-hour panel interview that was pretty technical, covering pricing, modeling, and filing. Got the offer about a week later. The whole thing was smooth, and the questions let me show what I know.
- Could you explain how you would estimate increased limit factors?
- What's your approach to measuring correlation between categorical variables?
Actuarial Intern
The interview process started with a phone screen with a recruiter where we talked about my resume, the actuarial career path, and the insurance industry generally. After that, I had a conversation with an Actuarial Analyst, which was pretty similar to the first call, but we dug deeper into the auto insurance industry and my personal projects. Finally, there was a three-hour interview with three members of the Actuarial Team. The first part involved direct questions on probability and statistics, the second part focused on the auto insurance industry and its practices with some really interesting questions, and the last part was a tough Excel exercise.
- Can you explain the bias-variance tradeoff?
