First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Rocket Money.
Software Engineer
It was kind of an odd process. Felt like they were just checking boxes, not super engaged. Everyone was nice but not the most skillful interviewers; they seemed to know what they were looking for in terms of criteria but not much beyond that.
- How do you find the intersection of two arrays?
- In React, how would you fetch data from an API and render it, with a focus on performance?
- For SQL, what's the difference between left and inner joins? Also, can you explain GROUP BY, DATE, and TRUNC?
Data Engineer
The interview went well. It's important to be well-prepared with the STAR method. Additionally, make sure to research the company's philosophy and try to incorporate that into your discussion during the interview. Connect your STAR method examples to the company's culture and philosophy.
- Can you share an instance where a project you were involved in did not go as planned? What steps did you take to manage the situation?
Growth Marketing Specialist
I interviewed with Rocket Money in March for about three weeks, going through the recruiter screen, hiring manager interview, case study, leadership, and team interviews. The hiring manager loved my case study, and I felt great about my performance with the team. Before meeting leadership, the recruiter told me it would be a reverse interview (me asking them questions), but when I joined, leadership said it would be a standard interview. I was prepared for that as well, though the sudden switch made me a bit nervous at first. I rambled for a minute, took a sip of water, and then got right back on track. The rest of the interview went smoothly. A few days later, the recruiter emailed me saying they had “updates” and to hop on a call. I replied right away, but he called the next day to say they went with another candidate because leadership didn’t find my answers “creative” enough. It was disappointing after investing so much time and effort, especially when most of the process went so well.
- Tell me about yourself and your experience.
- Why are you interested in this role and our company?
- Describe a time you faced a challenge in a previous marketing campaign and how you overcame it.
Product Manager
Had a first chat with the recruiter who let me know the next day we should set up an interview with the Hiring Manager. The interview with the HM went well, they asked about my background and I felt good about it. After more than a week, I got a standard rejection email. During that week I tried to get an update from the recruiter, but no reply. After the rejection email, I messaged the recruiter to thank them for the process and asked for feedback - still no response! My advice - show respect to people in the process, it says a lot about how you treat your staff.
- Can you introduce yourself and share what kind of role you are seeking?
