Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Roblox.
User Experience Designer
The interview process felt disrespectful and like a waste of time. Pay close attention to the design challenge instructions. Three designer friends had similar negative experiences. First, you do a design challenge just to qualify to speak with the hiring manager, which seems to be Roblox's only way of checking if you're worthy. After you submit your solution, they don't acknowledge your effort. Like others, I got the design challenge after the recruiter call. After putting in days of work, I only got a call with the hiring manager, who then rejected me for a subjective reason. Second, the conversation was rude, negative, and off-topic. The hiring manager seemed uninterested in my skills and asked personal, non-design related questions for half the call. They were late, rushed the call, and impatient with my questions. Throughout, the hiring managers acted superior and disrespected candidates. I don't regret not moving forward, but I do regret spending my time on them.
- questions about design decisions
UX Designer
So for the UX Design intern role, first they checked my resume and then I got the design test. It was a 7-day design challenge which they don't do anymore. I had to pick one of two prompts to design for. After that, there was a 30-minute 'behavioral test' with basic questions about me and how I work in a team. Then, for another 30 minutes, I presented my design test to a current designer. Finally, my recruiter gave me the offer.
- Tell me about a time you faced a challenge.
- Describe a situation where you had a disagreement with a teammate about a design decision.
- Can you share an instance where you had to solve a problem?
UX Designer
The whole thing took about 2 weeks from start to offer, which was pretty fast. I did mention I was in final rounds elsewhere, and the recruiter was great at keeping me updated. One thing they could improve is giving a contact number; I couldn't call them when I was looking for the onsite interview location. Besides that, it was a really nice process, and the onsite took about 3 hours.
- What's your approach to designing a way for employees to remember to clock in after lunch to avoid losing pay?
