Engineering Manager
The recruiter ghosted me halfway through the process and won't respond to emails. I applied for an EM role and a recruiter set up a call. She was late to call. During the call, I felt she might be overloaded. She said she'd give my info to the hiring manager and get back to me in a few days. A week passed, so I followed up. She said they wanted to proceed with a technical screen via Karat. I did the screen and waited a week for a response, but got none. I followed up again. She apologized for the delay and said she'd have an update the next day. Two weeks went by with no email, so I emailed again a week ago, and she still hasn't responded. Please don't waste candidates' time if you don't plan to follow through.
- The technical screen included a code review and a coding challenge. Both are straightforward if you can recognize patterns in the questions.
Engineering Manager
I was first contacted by a recruiter about a Software Engineer role, but I let her know I was actually looking for an Engineering Manager position and sent her some links. We had an initial chat about my background. She was really vague about the specific role I was being considered for, and instead pushed a 'Systems Engineer' position, saying everyone starts there and they figure out fit later. The actual process involves a Karat interview, followed by a virtual on-site with 4-5 interviews, and possibly chats with senior execs. My Karat interview was supposed to be an hour. The interviewer spent about 20 minutes introducing himself, asking about my experience and projects. He then said there would be one question and I'd have the rest of the time to solve it, with passing all test cases being the main goal, not optimization. I finished it with all tests passing within the time limit. Karat sent the recording to Roblox, and I heard back a week later that I wasn't a 'good technical match'. When I asked for feedback, I was shocked to find out they expected me to solve multiple questions in the Karat interview! It's wild how different the actual expectations were from what the Karat interviewer told me. And why waste 20 minutes on projects if they wanted multiple questions answered? This company seems to have no clue what they're doing – communication is a mess, both internally and externally. The recruiter couldn't even answer basic questions. I definitely don't want to work there now, so it's a good thing it didn't work out.
- Can you find a rectangle composed entirely of 0s within a 2D grid of 1s and 0s, and then report its location and dimensions?
Senior Software Engineering Manager
I got referred, so I started chatting with VPs to find a Director with an open role that fit. Found one, connected with the Director who was the Hiring Manager. The HM screen was to chat about my management background, how involved I am with people and tech direction, and to answer some questions about the company and how the interviews work. Then I had a technical screen with Karat, done by a contractor. It was 1 hour and had two parts: first, a code review of server code with comments, and second, building a program based on provided inputs and outputs. They said I could redo it within 48 hours if I wanted. After that, it was the virtual onsite. I had 4 more interviews covering management, how I handle projects, working with product teams, and system design. Lastly, there was an executive round with two 30-minute chats, one with the CTO and one with the CEO. We talked about my history and career path, and why I want to join Roblox. I also got about 10-15 minutes to ask them questions.
- Can you review this server code and provide annotations?
- Implement a program using the given inputs and expected outputs.
- Tell me about your experience managing teams and technical direction.
