First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Robin Hood Foundation.
Public Policy Associate
It was quite an extensive interview process. Started with an initial screening, then I had a first and second round interview with individual staff members. After that, there was a research and writing assignment. The final stage was a panel interview. They were pretty good about replying and seemed to value my time up until the very end, when they decided to reject me via a phone call after I'd already invested so much time. Honestly, they could have, and definitely should have, just made that final rejection call a phone call.
- Tell me about yourself and your experience.
- Please conduct a literature review on a current policy issue or paradigm.
Program Officer
I had an informational chat with a former exec, and then applied online for the Program Officer role. HR reached out to set up an in-person meeting with the hiring manager. We talked for about an hour, it was pretty conversational and not like a typical interview. He mentioned the next step was meeting his team. A couple weeks later, I met the two current program officers for another hour-long chat. They talked about the job and the company, and it was also very casual. However, they kept hinting that I was older and overqualified for what they were looking for. I tried to address their concerns about my age and qualifications. After not hearing back for two weeks, I contacted the hiring manager. He scheduled a call later that week. During the call, he told me they went with another candidate whose experience was a better fit.
- What makes you interested in Robin Hood and this specific opportunity at this time?
Program Officer
It was a really tough timed assignment. We had four meetings in total. First was a preliminary phone call with the "Human Capital" department. Then I had in-person meetings with the Human Capital managing director, and then with the program director. After that, I was given a timed assignment to complete – I had 3 hours to do 4 tasks. Finally, I had to go and present my completed assignments to the human capital and program director.
- What is your motivation for wanting to work at Robin Hood?
Community Fellow
Applied and then got a call about an interview that would be three weeks after applying. The interview happened a week after that informational call. It was at the NYC headquarters and went okay, I was nervous and a bit jittery, but the two interviews went normally.
- This job involves significant legwork and tedious paperwork. How does that sit with you?
