Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Reynolds American.
Territory Manager
The interview experience was easygoing and made me feel comfortable, like I was at home. They ask good questions to learn more about the candidates. Some might find the questions challenging, but the goal is to identify individuals who are serious about their career and seeking a long-term commitment, rather than just looking for a job with a salary.
- Can you share an instance where you dealt with a challenging customer and explain how you resolved it to their satisfaction?
Territory Manager
Got an offer 1 month after applying. Initial contact was an email 3 days after I applied, asking for availability for a phone call. The call happened a week later. In this 10 min call, the recruiter told me the salary & benefits and some job details. I confirmed my interest. Then I had to do an online personality test. After that, we scheduled a zoom interview for a week later. It was a 45 min interview with 3 interviewers and me. They shared their career stories and asked standard questions, seeming genuinely interested. After the interview, I was offered the job, pending a background check & drug test.
- Can you walk us through your background?
- Could you share a positive experience from your work history?
- Tell us about a time you failed.
Territory Manager
This was a very conversational interview experience, heavily focused on the STAR method. There were two panel interviews, each lasting a maximum of 35 minutes, with two district or regional managers in each. All four interviewers were friendly and approachable, wanting candidates to be open and honest. It's advised to be well-prepared even though the atmosphere is relaxed. If a specific example isn't available for a question, it's acceptable to explain what you believe the best course of action would be. The company, RAI, covers travel expenses for interviews, which was a first for me but apparently standard practice. The hotel and staff were great, and the recruiters were helpful, though perhaps a bit overwhelmed. Ginger in travel was particularly useful. Eating off-site was recommended to save costs. Answers can sometimes be used for multiple questions, but consistency is key as they take notes and collaborate. RAI products and history were only briefly touched upon. A 'day on the trade' (DOTT), a ride-along with a Territory Manager, didn't happen for me, so I asked about the day-to-day tasks instead. Significant emphasis was placed on leadership, relationship building, teamwork, and corporate values, with questions like 'Are you a good team member?' and 'Are you a good team leader?'. Watching behavioral interview videos is recommended, as the questions seem common. Being outgoing and positive from the start is important, as interviewers might test your reaction to initial stand-offish behavior. Taking notes on background information provided by interviewers is advised, as is bringing an organized portfolio. A follow-up call from the recruiter within two business days was expected to discuss performance. An interview being moved up is possible and could be a test. Showing respect for the time and effort invested by RAI is important, especially since interviewers have other duties. Despite the positive and conversational nature, the outcome was unfortunately a rejection, despite significant investment in the process. The training for the position is extensive, involving a thirteen-week program that's largely online but considered a year-long process with continuous learning.
- Why are you interested in RAI?
- What is your understanding of what drives business?
- Can you share an instance where you used data to inform your decision-making?
