The hiring manager reached out via email and we set up a video call to go over the role. After that, I had a technical round with an engineer. I then completed a coding exercise in React. After that, I was ghosted. Everything was nice, but they just stopped responding.

First, I spoke with a recruiter. Then, about a week later, I had two one-hour technical screens: one focused on frontend and the other on general programming. The next day, I was told those went well and set up a virtual onsite for two weeks out. The onsite had four one-hour interviews: frontend, general programming, system design, and a manager chat. The recruiter mentioned a prep session beforehand, but never scheduled it. I heard back about the onsite results a week later. The recruiter called with feedback, saying I did great on the frontend parts but not as well on the other technical sections.

  • In the frontend interviews, could you build a React component that initially renders a simple data structure and then evolves to include features like fetching data from a mock API?
  • For the system design interview, describe the data structures and algorithms you would use to construct a feature relevant to Retool's products.

Coding

A recruiter reached out about a frontend engineer opening at Retool. I then had a 1-hour tech screen where I had to build a small React app in CodeSandbox. I managed to get all the required features working, but they passed on me, saying they were looking for someone with more experience. I'm not sure what specifically was lacking in my experience.
