Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Retool.
Support Engineer
We had several rounds of interviews. First, a company fit screening. Then, about 2-3 technical interviews where the task was to use the Retool platform to either accomplish a specific goal or do a mock training session to explain a feature. The final rounds were with senior leadership or management, focusing more on fit, including talking through different situations and how you'd respond.
- Can you build specific features using the Retool platform?
- Can you check the basic Retool documentation as it does a good job explaining features and mirrors the basics of functionalities you may be asked about?
- Do interview questions tend to range from simple to intermediate levels of what you will see in documentation?
Support Engineer
I had an initial chat with the hiring manager, then a take-home task where I got to build an app using Retool, which was pretty fun. After that, there were four interviews: first, a technical interview with a support engineer, then a behavioral chat with a support manager. Next was a teaching interview where I built an app with one engineer and then had to teach it to another. Finally, I had a last behavioral interview with the head of support. Everyone was really nice and helpful the whole way through, giving me pointers on what to focus on and how to get ready for each part, so there weren't any unexpected things. It was a genuinely great experience overall.
- What are your criteria for joining a new team?
Support Engineer
The whole interview was remote. I first chatted with the hiring manager who told me all about the gig and what they're looking for. She was really into hearing about me and my future plans, making it feel super chill, like a real talk, not a stiff interview. Then, a recruiter called me a few days later. They said I nailed the behavioral part and that I'd get an assignment via email. The goal was to get comfy with their platform. Since I just started messing with it when I saw the job, it was pretty straightforward to start building stuff. After getting the hang of it, I wrapped up the task in under an hour. Next up was a technical interview with some other Support Engineers. They hit me with questions on debugging and adding features to the app, starting easy and getting harder. It was actually pretty fun, and they were all really nice. Another call with the recruiter happened a week after that to talk about pay. A week after that, I got an offer, and then checked out the office a few days later. Everyone was super helpful and answered questions whenever I asked. They were good listeners, and you could tell they really dig working at Retool. Honestly, this was the most enjoyable interview process I've been through.
- It would be most helpful to share with you that if you are interested on this role, sign up for Retool and start building apps.
- Also, apply if you want to work with great people helping customers solving problems you have probably never seen before, and get ready to learn a lot!
