Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Research Foundation of CUNY.
Research Assistant
The interview was conducted by the professor and the PhD student I would be working with. We mostly discussed the job responsibilities and my comfort level with remote work.
- What sparked your interest in this research project, and can you confirm your availability for remote work?
Research Assistant
Got an email after applying, and set up an in-person interview for the next day. I met with my supervisor, a colleague, and the hiring manager. It felt more like a chat, they were friendly and answered my questions. Then there was a written test on stats analysis, which they'd mentioned in the email. They said they'd let me know within a week, but I actually got the offer the very next day. The whole thing from applying to getting the offer took less than a week.
- What are your research interests and goals?
- How is your present job relevant to this role?
- Can you describe your statistical analysis abilities?
Research Assistant
So I was an intern first, and the person I interviewed with, who I now work with, mainly wanted to know about my subject knowledge, research skills, publishing/editing experience, and if I knew any programming. Then I heard back a few days later and was invited to meet the deputy director and get some materials about the center's mission. I did that, and it was nice. I had to fill out a lot of paperwork for employment, but since I was an intern, they didn't submit it until I was hired part-time. People in my center suggested I look into work-study pay. The actual hiring process was a bit messy because I'd been hired for another project before, but it all got sorted out quickly. Since then, paying and anything handled by RFCUNY has been fine, but stuff managed by my office has had issues.
