First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Rent The Runway.
Software Engineer Intern
The interview process started with a take-home coding test. After that, there were three Zoom interviews with different people from RTR's engineering department. Unfortunately, the internship program got cancelled because of COVID, so I don't know if my interview went well.
- Write an algorithm to reverse the vowels in a given word and walk me through your thought process.
- Can you tell me about your background in the tech industry?
- What makes you interested in our company?
Software Engineer
The interview process started with a technical phone interview, followed by an onsite interview that went on for about six hours. The technical questions were pretty basic if you're familiar with data structures. Some technical questions were based on your resume, and they might even ask about technologies they don't currently use. Since they pre-assign you to a specific role, a big part of the interview focuses on the functional aspects of the role and the business side of things.
- Code an implementation of a Set. Note: a team member will transcribe your response as you speak, and the screen will show an IDE with tabs for the main class and test cases.
- Implement a Stack and retrieve its middle element. This question assesses your grasp of fundamental data structures. The input includes the array size and the integer array.
- Could you explain what the JVM is?
Software Engineer
My friend went through a 5-round interview process for a software engineer job in Galway, Ireland, including an HR screening. They felt all rounds went well, but then got a standard rejection email with no feedback. It seemed unprofessional and unethical, especially after dedicating hours to interviews and meeting senior engineers. They were very disappointed with the interview approach and advised others not to waste a month on their 5-stage process, as rejection emails seem predetermined.
- Questions about technical topics were asked.
- Questions about behavioral aspects were asked.
