Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Rec Room.
Software Engineer
I applied online twice over a 3-year period and was ghosted by the internal recruiters both times. I even followed up with an email a couple weeks after each initial call, and still heard nothing back. This company's culture seems like trash, so I'd avoid it.
- Can you tell me about your skills and experience?

The initial phone screen was straightforward and the hiring manager was very pleasant and considerate. Unfortunately, I was rejected before my onsite interview could be scheduled because I was on vacation. The HR department and their overall process were quite poor. They offer significantly below market rate compensation, relying on promises of substantial stock options. The recruiter attempted to explain the financial benefits extensively, but ultimately, if it's not part of your guaranteed total compensation, it's not concrete earnings. Furthermore, RecRoom only provides a one-week window for offer acceptance and specifically seeks candidates who are 'passionate.' This approach feels highly disrespectful to applicants and makes me hesitant to recommend them.

I interviewed with Rec Room back in December 2020. The interview process had two phone screens, followed by a final round which was five video interviews. Honestly, this was one of the better software engineer interview processes I've gone through. The recruiting team was fantastic and kept me informed throughout. The technical questions were challenging but fair, focusing on practical programming skills instead of tricky algorithm puzzles. It was also great talking with everyone; they were genuinely enthusiastic about Rec Room and its players.
- Would prefer not to share technical interview questions since those can show up in future interviews. Technical questions aside, I think the most important thing is just being familiar with Rec Room and genuinely really wanting to work on it.
