Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Ramsey Solutions.
Creative Designer
After I applied, Ramsey's recruitment team reached out within three days for a phone call. This was followed by another call to discuss a design challenge. I completed the challenge and then had an HR Zoom interview where they shared details about the company culture, specifically mentioning that Ramsey adheres to Christian values for its employees. They stated that if you don't share these values, you shouldn't apply. Ultimately, the design team selected other candidates whose design challenge submissions were a better match for their needs. I received a call from the recruiter informing me I wasn't selected, which I appreciated as it's good to be treated like a person. Ramsey is a challenging company to get into, but I'm proud of how far I progressed, preferring to be eliminated early rather than at the final stage.
- How does your experience prepare you for this position?
Graphic Designer
I started with an intro call from a recruiter where they asked about my background and what I knew about Ramsey's values. Then, I had to do a design challenge with five different assets. I put a lot of work into it, spending over 20 hours in five days. The recruiter said they liked my project but decided to go with others. When I asked why, they said the team wanted to see more portfolio work and wanted me to push my challenge idea 10-15% further. It's frustrating because the challenge was so open-ended, and I saw many similar ones online, which makes me think they have a biased idea of what a good solution is. The recruiter did mention I wouldn't have to do the design challenge again if I applied for another role, which makes me wonder why it was necessary in the first place. I'm just really bummed because I like Ramsey and their mission. It's also disheartening to know there would have been 4-5 more steps if I had advanced.
- Tell me why you want to join the Ramsey team.
- What are your thoughts on credit cards?
- What is your perspective on the value of Colossians 3:23?
Graphic Designer
So, the first interview was with a recruiter, super quick and to the point. But here's the kicker: before I could even talk to anyone on the design team, I had to watch two episodes of Financial Peace University and complete a design project that would take me 5-10 hours. Honestly, asking for that much unpaid work so early on was a huge red flag. It just shows they don't really value our time. I mean, why should someone do 10 hours of free work, especially when they already have a portfolio to show, and that too before even talking to another designer? This also seems like it would cut down on the diversity of candidates because it excludes people who can't afford to spend that much time on unpaid work. I'm not sure Ramsey cares about diversity, but they should really try to be better.
