The hiring manager set up an online meeting for the initial interview. It was a relaxed and supportive conversation, especially since it was before my bar exam, and the interviewer offered encouragement for my bar prep.

The interview process started with a phone screen and then moved to an in-person interview. The HR team was quite professional, more so than at other places I've interviewed. The overall environment felt a bit awkward though, with employees who seemed to have been there forever and a very sterile vibe. While the employees came across as nice, the managing partners used a good cop/bad cop routine. The job description kept changing, and by the end, it seemed like they needed a whole team rather than just one person. The firm appears to be overly close to their problems and unaware they need an outside viewpoint. One partner made me really uncomfortable by sharing privileged information during the interview.

I knew a partner in the IP group at the Chicago office, so when I saw the posting for a position in Milwaukee, I asked him about it. He encouraged me to apply and gave me some information about the Milwaukee office and the partner I would be working with if I got the job. He also warned me that there was a well-liked internal candidate, so that would be an added challenge. A week or so after I applied, I got an email asking me to set up a phone interview with a partner and an associate. The partner got called away at the last minute, so the interview ended up just being with the associate.

I first chatted with a Patent Engineer, Agent, and Attorney at a career fair booth. They then invited me on-site for an in-person interview. The interview process involved about 8-10 one-on-one interviews with various patent engineers, agents, and attorneys at the firm. After the interviews, there was an evening reception in the same building where I could socialize with other job seekers and the interviewers.
