Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at PSEG.
Engineer
It started with a recruiter phone screen, then we moved onto a more formal panel interview. The panel had 3 people, and they each asked questions. The interview format was STAR, so they asked me to describe a Situation I was in that had a good outcome, the Tasks involved, the Actions I took, and the Results of my actions.
- Can you tell me about a time you dealt with a stressful situation that required you to use your coping skills?
Project Engineer
First, I had to do a video interview on Hire-Vue, with unlimited attempts. Then, about three days after the deadline, I got an email with available dates. I was at work and planned to answer later, but 5 hours later, I got a call saying they only had three spots left and I needed to choose immediately. I ended up with dates the very next day, so if you get that email, grab it quickly! I went to their office for an in-person interview with two people. They first asked me to briefly go over my resume. After that, they asked about five STAR-based questions. I noticed they took notes and gave scores on their papers, with 5 seeming to be the highest. Then, they left the room and I was given three open-ended technical questions to answer on paper, so remember to bring a pen. It wasn't too stressful, but have good responses ready; I blanked on the creative solution question. Remember, every failure makes you better for the next time. It took them a month to send their decision.
- Can you describe a situation where you had to handle an angry customer?
- Tell me about a time you experienced a conflict with a superior.
- Share an instance of dealing with a team member who was not being productive.
Project Engineer
So I had a really annoying interview process. First, I got a phone call, then an automated email the next day saying I was rejected. But then, a week and a half later, they called me to come to North Jersey, acting like that email never happened. On the day of the rescheduled interview, they cancelled on me in the morning. I told them I could only reschedule for the following week, and they basically said it was either come in later that week or don't bother. So, I didn't go. Not worth it.
- I had to record a video interview before coming in for an in-person interview.
