The hiring process had three stages. It began with an online assessment on HackerRank that tested core problem-solving skills through data structures, algorithms, and a few implementation tasks. After clearing that round, there was a technical interview of about 45 to 50 minutes. This round focused on coding questions, discussion of approaches, edge cases, and a brief look at foundational concepts like time complexity and data structures. The final stage was a 30-minute conversation with the hiring manager that also included technical evaluation. This round explored how I approach real-world problems, communicate ideas, and think through system-level decisions while also checking my fit with the team’s expectations and work culture.

- The first problem was a multi source BFS scenario on a grid. The grid contained three types of cells. Zero represented vaccinated people who are immune and cannot be infected. One represented healthy people who can catch the infection. Two represented already infected people. The infection spreads to the four neighbouring cells up, down, left, and right every unit of time. Multiple infected people can start this spread at the same time, so all cells with value two act as starting points. The task was to simulate this process using a breadth first search that begins from all infected cells at once, then spreads level by level. The final answer was the time needed for the infection to reach every healthy cell. If any healthy cell stays unreachable because it is blocked by vaccinated cells, the answer becomes impossible.
- The second problem was a two pointer pattern involving a binary array. The array is made of zeros and ones. The goal was to find the longest streak of consecutive ones, but with a twist. You are allowed to flip exactly one zero to one. The challenge is to use two pointers, often called left and right, to maintain a window that contains at most one zero. As the right pointer moves through the array, you count how many zeros are inside the window. If the window contains more than one zero, you shift the left pointer forward until the extra zero is removed. The maximum length reached by such a window is the answer, which represents the longest possible chain of ones after flipping a single zero.

I was reached out to by the company initially. I replied and followed up 3 times because I didn't hear back. A month and a half later, I finally got a response. I did the phone interview, which went well, and then they wanted me to come onsite for a two-hour interview with 4 different people. Six days later, I received a generic "thank you for applying" email, which was tacky given the time and money I invested. It was also rude considering I took time out of my day and spent money to come onsite for the interview. It was a poor candidate experience overall.

I found the opening on LinkedIn and messaged the recruiter. She was quick to respond and professional. After we talked about the job and pay, she set up my first interview. The portfolio review with a senior designer was great. I got to show my work, explain my process, and answer questions about my design choices and background. The interviewer made it easy to show what I can do. The next round was with a senior engineer and was more about fitting in, being flexible, and solving problems. They asked about my past and about hypothetical design situations and what I expect from the job. The recruiter was really helpful throughout, always professional, easy to talk to, and fast with updates. She made it smooth by scheduling things, answering questions, and letting me know what was happening after each step.

The interview process was great. First, a call with HR to introduce project44 and discuss the role. Then, an interview with the engineering manager about my past experience and the tech I've used. After that, a technical round with a team member focusing on tools I've used and why, plus questions on observability, deployments, and managing many repos. This was followed by another technical round with a cloud architect, which was a bit more casual, asking about tools and tech. Finally, a behavioral round with the Cloud VP, which was a bit stressful, covering how I'd handle production issues. The HR was very responsive and I liked the compensation discussion approach. I didn't end up joining due to personal reasons, but I've heard it's a great place to work. The interviews were enjoyable and I learned a lot.
