First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Price Chopper Supermarkets (NY).
Cashier
I applied online. Had a phone interview, then went in for an in-person interview. The person who called me for the phone interview seemed a bit unorganized. The in-person interview was okay, nothing special. I already put my availability on the online application and mentioned it again during the phone interview, but the person interviewing me in person didn't seem to know that and was annoyed I couldn't work nights or overnights. I have over 10 years of retail/cashier experience, but they only offered me 10 cents more than minimum wage, so I turned it down.
- What days and times are you available to work?
Grocery Manager
I applied through the internal employee site for a job posting at the store I was already working in. The interview happened after my shift ended. So for folks applying from outside, I'm not sure how the process would go. Mostly, they asked about how I'd deal with an upset customer, or a disagreement between staff members. I was also asked what I'd do if the power failed, the refrigeration broke down, or how to best manage when someone in a critical role called out sick. Standard questions, plus some about managing displays and keeping inventory in check.
- What makes you the right candidate for this role?
Stock Associate
It was a bit tough trying to connect with a real person because there was a lot of online stuff. I was trying to get in touch with someone to see if and when I'd be considered. The background check took ages and left me wondering if they'd uncovered something I didn't know about, as they kept saying 'waiting on background check, is there something on there we should know?' I kept saying no, and still no results for a few days. Finally, they cleared it and said I was hired. I just feel like they could have handled communicating with me in person more.
- What makes you want to be employed at Price Chopper?
Bakery Associate
I got there early and ended up waiting since the interviewers were late. The hiring manager spoke with me first about my previous jobs and how I'd handle different customer scenarios, like if someone needed help. Then, the bakery manager joined and asked about my work history and skills. She must have liked what she heard because she offered me the job, just needing a background check first. I even got out of the cashier training.
- What's your approach to dealing with an upset customer?
- Describe your previous work experiences.
- How would you respond to various customer service situations, such as assisting someone in need?
