Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Premera Blue Cross.
Manager
The interview process was extremely long and disorganized, with multiple applicants experiencing what felt like an interminable wait. One applicant went through over ten interviews, including panels, and another had more than four panels. Recruiters seemed to lack awareness of their colleagues' work, leading to poor communication and coordination. Candidates frequently had to initiate contact for status updates, as follow-up was minimal. One recruiter was notably rude and dismissive towards mid-management and executive candidates. There was a lack of sincerity, with recruiters providing inconsistent information about the process and outcomes, often leaving candidates confused about how their final decision contrasted with previous feedback. Candidates were kept waiting for an extended period, typically 5-6 months. Job descriptions were posted before the company had finalized the role definition. Recruiters sometimes used insincere flattery to keep candidates engaged but couldn't provide clear feedback on 'no hire' decisions, especially when they contradicted earlier positive signals. One recruiter even suggested a candidate would be unhappy in their 'crazy culture' despite strong qualifications. The company came across as disorganized, unprofessional, and organizationally dysfunctional, seemingly unprepared for the current health insurance market. There was a suspicion that senior executives felt threatened by highly accomplished individuals from other industries, and there seemed to be a bias against external candidates with strong backgrounds, suggesting an inward-looking culture. It's advised to carefully vet any offers and speak with executives who have successfully transitioned from other companies or industries.

They seemed interested at first but then ghosted me after the interviews without any feedback. Some interviewers seemed annoyed because they weren't expecting the interview slot. It's a good idea to check out the actual workspace, not just the meeting rooms.
- Standard technical questions were asked.
- Some behavioral questions were asked.
- Some questions were inappropriate, with the interviewer saying, 'You don't have to answer if you don't want to, but...'
Management
I had about 10 interviews in total. I met with the hiring manager, the team that would report to me, internal stakeholders I'd work with, people I'd be closely working with, and my skip boss. For management roles like this, you also get to meet the CEO.
- Describe what you would do in a specific situation.
- How do you see yourself fitting into Premera's culture?
