I applied in early March and got contacted March 28th by an HR associate to schedule a 30 min phone interview. The first phone interview with the HR associate went well, but it was very basic, not much conversation, just standard behavioral questions, plus some about my current industry. She mentioned the next step would be meeting her hiring manager to review her short list, and then contacting those candidates for in-person or phone interviews if they were out of state. A week went by and I was contacted the following Monday by an admin to set up a phone interview with two team members that Friday. The interview was planned for 1 hr, from 3:30PM -4:30PM. Friday arrived and I got one call from a team member at 4:00 p.m., lasting 30 mins. It was a good interview and the interviewer seemed more engaged and interested in my responses. He thought someone had called at 3:30PM and spoken until 4:00 PM when he made his call. Despite some miscommunication on their end, it wasn't a big issue. His assistant then contacted me to schedule another time for the following Monday at 4:00 PM. Monday came and that interview didn't go as well as I hoped, though I did give thorough and concise answers. The male interviewer seemed distant and disengaged throughout the call, almost like he was multitasking on his computer. He'd ask a question, I'd answer, and he'd immediately ask another, with no follow-up or comments on my responses, unlike the Friday interviewer. He was very abrupt and seemed uninterested. At the end, he said someone would reach out either way. Two days later, on Wednesday at 8:00 PM, I got an email saying, 'while your qualifications are impressive, we will not be proceeding at this time.' A typical rejection. The whole thing took about two weeks.

The interview process was pretty standard, mostly behavioral questions. It was a one-on-one interview format. We started with a phone interview, then had two more rounds of one-on-one interviews. The phone interview and the first round went well. The second round was going great until the last interviewer, who was surprisingly the longest-tenured employee, showed up 15 minutes late, didn't apologize, and rushed through my interview. It was an uncomfortable experience, especially since I later learned she had issues with the person who referred me. The other interviewers were professional and seemed genuinely interested in my background. Overall, it was a good experience, and I was surprised not to get an offer, but I've moved on.

The interview process consisted of five separate thirty-minute one-on-one meetings. While the interviewers were generally pleasant, some seemed eager to conclude the sessions quickly. Others adopted a more relaxed approach, making the interactions feel like casual discussions. I received a job offer despite lacking prior experience in sales, business development, or account management, as my background was primarily in marketing and communications. I ultimately declined the offer due to the salary being somewhat low and my reluctance to accept a role with a commission-based bonus structure. It's important to note that if your goal is simply to work at Politico, this specific position might not be the glamorous role within a news organization that you expect. The office environment and company culture are appealing, but the actual work might not suit everyone's preferences.
