It was an easy process, and the environment was very inclusive, which made me feel comfortable. I had interviews with peers and managers so I could get a comprehensive understanding of the role and the company. There were also some behavioral questions.

Behavioral Technical Case Presentation

Had a phone screening with the recruiter, which went well. We went over the role details and salary range. They asked if I was open to a contractor role, but I wasn't. The first real interview was 90 minutes with a senior managing consultant who was really engaged and easy to talk to. They gave me an overview of their background, and I did the same. They made the opportunity sound very exciting. I had to share a work example on screen, discussing my role, what I'd do differently looking back, and how I defined success for that project. They also presented some case study scenarios, like how to prepare for a certain situation or how to set client expectations for a website/app overhaul project at a credit union. The final 90-minute interview involved a pre-prepared case study. I had to create a one-pager addressing three different scenarios sent by the recruiter, and I submitted it beforehand. The interviewer was a Senior Director. They immediately started asking questions without introducing themselves or asking me to share my background. The questions were identical to the previous round, including the credit union case study scenario (about 10-15 minutes). It felt like they hadn't reviewed my resume. My prepared case study wasn't discussed at all. When I brought it up at the end, they said they prefer 'on the spot questions and case studies,' even though they asked ones I'd already covered. It felt like a waste of my time preparing the one-pager. The interviewer made unprofessional comments about recent layoffs, their own role being eliminated, and having to reapply after 15 years, which was off-putting. A week later, the recruiter informed me I wasn't moving forward, citing the interviewer's feedback. When I asked if other interviewers had similar comments, the recruiter confirmed it was solely from that one interviewer.

Technical Case Behavioral

The interview process took about two months and was poorly managed, mainly due to the final interviewer. After an initial discussion about my experience and salary expectations, I successfully passed the intermediate interviews and case studies, receiving positive feedback. I even completed a case study on my own time. However, during the final interview, the hiring manager seemed unprepared, unfamiliar with my background and previous successes. He stated my experience wasn't relevant for the role I applied for and suggested I was being considered for a more junior position, despite my qualifications being clear from the start. This lack of preparedness from a management consulting firm was surprising, especially given their ownership model which might mean some tenured employees lack necessary qualifications and training. Ultimately, I received better offers from companies with more effective recruitment processes. It seems putting the hiring manager earlier in the process could prevent such issues. This experience felt like a waste of time.
