First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Planned Parenthood.
Payroll Manager
I had some questions about my skills, but about a third of the interview was screening questions about my experience with racial inequality and how I handled it. The recruiter asked about my experience with racial equity in one interview, and then again in the next interview. When I answered and then made it very clear I did not feel comfortable complaining about my current employer, the tone of the recruiter changed dramatically. I reached out after being rejected the following week in good faith and asked what I could improve. She never answered. I am 100% certain it was because I did not give an answer that fulfilled their obsession with race. I do not recommend anyone work here if that is how they run their business. Certainly the weirdest interview process I have ever dealt with. I answered not only awkwardly stating that certainly have there been things I have seen in my line of work that were not equitable, but that there was nothing I could do about this working in payroll. I also explained certain situations where we have had tense situations due to a person’s race and claims of discrimination and how important it was to keep a level head with impartiality in order to protect your company. That is HR’s main goal, of course. The change in tone after I said this was quite remarkable.
- Can you describe a time you encountered racial inequity at work and how you managed it?
- What inequities have you observed in your field, and what was your reaction?
- Tell me about your experience with racial equity and how you've handled it.
Payroll Specialist
I applied and about 3 to 4 weeks later, they reached out via email to schedule an interview. Since everyone's still remote due to the pandemic, it was a video call with the Assistant to the Finance Director and someone from HR. It was a straightforward interview where they asked about my payroll knowledge and my current job responsibilities. After that, I was selected for a second round with a more senior person in the department. This interview was good and dug deeper into my current role and what I hoped to achieve by changing jobs. They asked some questions I found a bit strange for the role, like how I would advise executives on changing work policies. Unfortunately, I didn't make it past this stage, which was a bummer, but given my unfamiliarity with their system and the high number of applicants, I wasn't totally shocked.
- Can you describe your current role?
- How do you handle workplace disagreements?
- What's your strategy for discussing policy changes with upper management?
Staff Accountant
First, there was a brief introduction to the company and its values. Then, I had one-on-one interviews with two different senior staff members. Everyone was really friendly and welcoming. They were very clear about what they're looking for in a candidate and what kind of experience they want. They specifically mentioned needing previous experience related to the job and that the candidate should be a good team player.
- What's your understanding of our company?
- Do you align with our company's mission?
- Can you describe your proficiency with Excel?
