Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Pick N Save.
Cashier
The interview process was rude, with the interviewer being late and degrading. It felt unprofessional and like they were just hiring to fill a quota, possibly through reverse affirmative action, where one culture was allowed to take precedence and others were squelched. I was accused of lying regarding the quota, and the boss was touching me. There was constant gossip, and employees who needed to be taught skills to be successful were ignored.
- Are you able to work all store hours?
- Was the job a bait and switch, hired to cashier instead of utility clerk?
Cashier
The hiring process was super fast, wrapping up in just about a week. I got a call on Monday for an interview on Wednesday, which lasted around 1.5 hours. It included a math test to make sure I could handle cashier duties, though I can't recall the passing score. Afterward, I had a one-on-one chat with a store manager who was really pleasant, and the whole experience felt good. On Thursday, I was invited back for a second interview on Friday morning. This time, I met with the same manager and her supervisor. That interview was about 45 minutes long, and both were very nice. Later that Friday, the male manager called to offer me the cashier job at about $7 an hour. I had initially applied seeking at least $8 to help with student loans, so I was a bit bummed. I get it though, given this is a small town. He said the most they could offer was $7.25 per hour, which was still unfortunately too low for my needs. I had to politely turn down the offer, even though I would have been happy to work there otherwise. Sorry, I can't remember more details; it was quite some time ago!
- Were you concerned about potentially being overqualified for the role?
Cashier
I went to a job fair and filled out some papers while waiting with other people. Then managers took us to cubicles for interviews. If you apply online, you do a phone interview and then they set up an in-person one. For me, since I showed up, three different people interviewed me, but not all at the same time. They asked typical questions like why you want to work there and about your volunteer background.
