First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Petco.
Assistant Store Manager
The interview process was straightforward and quite fast. They asked about my background in retail, my experience managing people, and my passion for pets. I didn't encounter any surprise questions; everything was within the scope of what I had prepared for.
- Can you share an instance where you had to handle a difficult direct report?
Store Manager
I was contacted by a recruiter about the Store Manager position. We had an initial interview that went well, and then I interviewed with the District Manager (DM). That also seemed to go well, and I was told they wanted to move forward with a final interview. A week passed without any further contact, and since everything else had moved so quickly, I reached out to the recruiter to follow up. I was then informed that very late the night before, they decided not to proceed with my candidacy. It was a bit strange, but understandable. I expressed interest in other lower-level positions to get my foot in the door and work my way up, but I was ghosted on that as well. The original job is still posted after more than two months, leading me to suspect it might be used as a lure for other roles.
- What are your strategies for managing an underperforming employee once you are in charge of the store?
- Can you tell me about your leadership approach?
Store Manager
They first asked about pets, like what kind I had, what I would be willing to deal with, my favorite and least favorite animals, and what I had as a kid. Then they quizzed me on all the different animals in the store. Next, they asked about my prior jobs, what I liked and didn't like about them. They wanted to know about my previous managers and their styles. They asked about the last store where I had a WOW experience. They also wanted to know about what I thought was a great customer service experience and how I handled stressful situations with employees or customers. Be ready to give several examples for all these questions. Finally, they asked why they should hire me, which isn't as easy as it sounds! I also made sure to come prepared with questions about the company, which they loved.
- In your opinion, why should you be hired over other candidates?
- Do you have any questions for us about the company?
