First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Paul Smith.
Sales Assistant
Got a screening call about a week after applying. Didn't get past this stage though. They call you, ask some questions, and then will get back to you in about a week to see if you'll be invited for an in-person interview.
- How would you define excellent customer service?
Merchandiser
I had one interview with the merchandiser and the merchandiser manager. They asked me about specific times I've handled large amounts of data, how I do store replenishments, how I analyze store performance, and how I manage stock transfers.
- Can you describe how you review store performance and determine which stock to relocate to different stores or adjust within stores?
Sales Associate
The interview process was pretty straightforward, though it took weeks for HR to get back to me about an interview, and I'd honestly forgotten about the application by then. During the interview itself, I was already nervous because I know how fashion retail managers can seem friendly but are actually assessing you in an unstructured way. On top of that, they asked about my age, which I found unnecessary and odd since I've never been asked that before and don't think it should matter for employment. I left feeling pretty hopeless, like I'd just wasted everyone's time.
- Why are you interested in Paul Smith?
- Have you worked with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)?
- What would be your course of action if a client was poached by another salesperson?
Visual Merchandising Assistant
I applied for the role online via the company website with a cover letter and CV. A few weeks later, I got an email confirming the interview. The process felt very automated and strict, requiring specific info in the cover letter to avoid being ignored. I also had to bring all my degree certificates, A Levels, GCSEs, and passport. The interview itself felt intimidating, like an interrogation, despite the company's unique image. They delved into my entire background: my university studies, why I chose them, every job I've had, and why I left each one, even questioning my decision to leave a job after 14 months. They even asked about irrelevant roles, like a sales position I held post-university. They mentioned a second round was definite due to the role's nature and required me to be available, which seemed odd since I'd already taken that day off. It would have made more sense to schedule the second round only after I passed the first stage. Regardless of the outcome, the entire experience was draining for an assistant role, feeling more like a recruitment for a senior position. This could mean they're seeking top talent or made a decision based on my appearance and decided to be difficult.
- Can you tell me your motivation for wanting to work for Paul Smith?
- Give an example of a commercial decision you made that positively affected sales.
- What led you to study [major] in university?
