Engineering Manager
Had an initial chat with HR for basic questions, then an interview with an Engineering Manager from the company. It wasn't a technical interview but covered standard management topics typical for large companies, requiring responses using the STAR method. This role isn't suitable if you're looking for a startup environment.
- Can you describe your approach to managing a team?
- What's your strategy for handling technical debt?
- Describe a situation where you had to address an underperforming team member.
Engineering Manager
The interview process started with a recruiter screening, which was a standard call to go over the company and position details, lasting about 30 minutes. After that, I had a 1-hour conversation with the Engineering Director where we discussed my past background and accomplishments. The final stage involved talking with an engineering team.
- Can you tell me about the current processes in your company?
- What are your reasons for seeking a new job opportunity?
Engineering Manager
So, first there was a chat with the hiring director, then system design and peer interviews for product. They said it was a Frontend Engineering Manager role. The product manager told me AI wasn't needed. Then I talked to an engineer from the AI team, which was weird since they said AI wasn't relevant. We kept it high-level. Later, they rejected me citing lack of AI expertise, which was confusing given what they said earlier. They also brought up new requirements like Sentry and more platform incident management, which weren't in the job description. It felt like different teams weren't on the same page and the criteria were unclear. This role's been open a while, maybe the changing expectations are why.
- How do you handle getting teams to align and sort out issues when they're working on things together?
