A recruiter reached out on Nov 12, 2024, for a Staff SWE role. Had a good initial call, then an interview with the hiring manager on Nov 22, 2024. This was followed by several technical rounds with team members and a final chat over the next few weeks. I was kept informed about the team, product, and culture. Then, after references cleared, I had another technical interview on Dec 19, 2024, which felt odd. On Dec 20, 2024, salary and benefits were discussed, and I was told an offer would come the next day. Instead, I got a rejection saying a new Head of Engineering is joining in Jan and the role would be revisited next year. This communication could have happened sooner and felt like a waste of time. The engineering team was great, but upper management's hiring process lacked clarity and professionalism.

The interview experience at Overjet felt really professional, engaging, and upfront. It kicked off with a screening call with Nina Chepovska, who's in HR and was super nice and helpful. After that, there were three more interviews. First up was Sheraz Ahmed, a staff software engineer. He was really friendly and engaging, and we talked about the kinds of engineering problems I've solved, going into the details of how complex they were and how I figured things out. Then, I did a design exercise with Steve Strassmann, a senior staff engineer. He was easy to talk to and smart during this design chat, which was pretty open-ended. I had to come up with a solution to a technical problem and actually write some code. The last technical interview was with Wade Green, a senior director of engineering. He was really thorough and thoughtful, asking about both the technical stuff and how I work with people. He wanted to know about projects I'd managed and how I deal with disagreements on design. Finally, I talked with Marcus Gois, an engineering manager, who was very open and gave me feedback on my answers the whole time, which was helpful in making sure we were on the same page. It was a really thorough process that gave me a good idea of what they expect for the role and the team.

Do you like engineers rifling technical questions at you like its CS jeopardy? They also left zero time for questions. The Director I interviewed with didn't actually know anything about the position.
